Frequently Asked Questions
What age can my baby start baby massage?
Baby massage is suitable from birth. Many parents start in the early weeks or months, but you can begin whenever feels right for you and your baby. The most important thing is that you feel ready and comfortable leaving the house. For some mums, getting out can be a real boost to mental wellbeing, offering the chance to spend time with others in a safe, home-from-home environment.

What are the benefits of baby massage?
Baby massage offers benefits in four main categories:

-
Interaction / Communication – Enhancing bonding, helping you understand and respond to your baby’s cues, and building mutual trust.
-
Stimulation – Supporting the development of your baby’s bodily systems through nurturing touch.
-
Relief – Helping to ease common discomforts such as wind, constipation, or growing pains.
-
Relaxation – Encouraging relaxation for both you and your baby, which can support better sleep patterns and reduce stress.
Do I need any experience?
No experience is needed. I will demonstrate each stroke slowly, and you’ll be able to follow along at your own pace. Every course is baby-led, so we go with what your baby is happy and comfortable with.

What should I bring?
You don’t need to bring anything — towels, mats, and oils are all provided each week. Just bring plenty of nappies and a spare outfit for baby… they do tend to get very relaxed 💩
Can my partner attend too?
Yes. Baby massage is a wonderful way for both parents to connect with their baby, so partners are welcome to join the larger group courses at Beyond Midwives. Semi-private courses are women-only due to the smaller, more intimate space. Just let me know when booking if your partner will be attending so I can set up a space and include their name on your name card.

What if my baby cries, feeds, or sleeps during the session?
That’s all part of a normal baby-led class. You are welcome to feed, cuddle, or comfort your baby whenever they need it, and you can still watch and learn the strokes to practise later.

Is massage safe for premature babies?
IAIM techniques can be adapted for premature babies, but we recommend checking with your healthcare provider before starting.

Will I need to undress my baby fully?
Babies are usually undressed to their nappy for massage, but you can keep them covered however you feel comfortable.

How many classes are in a course?
My IAIM courses run over 5 weeks. This allows time to learn the full massage routine in small sections, repeat and practise, and enjoy relaxed discussion time each week. Semi-Private and private 1-1 courses are delivered across 4 weeks.
